Army Hospital (R&R) Gets Advanced Radiotherapy System for Cancer Treatment

In a major boost to military healthcare, the Department of Radiation Oncology at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator to strengthen advanced cancer care services for armed forces personnel, veterans and their dependents. The system was inaugurated in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on May 25, 2026.

The newly inducted technology is capable of delivering modern radiotherapy procedures such as Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). These techniques enable highly precise targeting of tumours while minimising radiation exposure to healthy tissues, thereby improving treatment outcomes and reducing side effects.

The advanced Linear Accelerator replaces older radiotherapy equipment that has now been decommissioned. Officials said the induction would significantly enhance the hospital’s in-house treatment capacity amid a growing cancer patient load and marks an important step in the modernisation of oncology infrastructure within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
